ALN
As a school we ensure that the needs of all children are met and developed through high quality teaching and learning provision.
If you would like to discuss anything relating to Additional Learning Needs at Holton Primary School, please contact Miss J Morgan (ALNCO)

At Holton Primary School we support learners through a graduated approach including three levels of provision: universal, extended and targeted.
Our Universal Provision includes:
-
whole class teaching
-
nurture breakfast
-
effective differentiation
-
collaborative group work
-
wellbeing lens
-
SELFIE Questionnaires
-
Emotional Literacy Support Assistants (ELSA)
We are also very fortunate to have a new sensory room which is extended to all learners when and if needed. This may be to support transition into school, to support regulation of emotions or to develop social interactions in a calming space.
As part of our school’s assessment cycle, learners may be identified as not making expected learning progress through our school’s universal provision. This a collaborative approach to identifying learner support and information is collected through several different communication routes; learner progress reviews, teacher feedback to the ALNCo, parental concerns, and whole school assessments to track progress. Once identified as having a barrier to learning which impacts upon the progress they make, pupils will be closely monitored using a graduated response of provision suited to their individual need. This may involve extended provision with focus on:
-
Developing literacy skills
-
Developing numeracy skills
-
Speech and Language support (Speech and Language Links, Wellcomm)
-
Social interaction skills (Lego Club)
-
Social and Emotional skills (ELSA)
-
Precision Teaching
When learners do not make their expected progress with Universal and Extended Provision and following thorough investigation and evidence gathering, a child may be identified as having ALN.
The Additional Learning Needs Code for Wales 2021
Definition of Additional Learning Needs
-
A person has additional learning needs if he or she has a learning difficulty or disability (whether the learning difficulty or disability arises from a medical condition or otherwise) which calls for additional learning provision, beyond the Universal and Extended provision provided for all learners.
-
A child of compulsory school age or person over that age has a learning difficulty or disability if he or she—
-
has a significantly greater difficulty in learning than the majority of others of the same age, or
-
has a disability for the purposes of the Equality Act 2010 which prevents or hinders him or her from making use of facilities for education or training of a kind generally provided for others of the same age in mainstream maintained schools.
-
-
A child under compulsory school age has a learning difficulty or disability if he or she is, or would be if no additional learning provision were made, likely to be within subsection (2) when of compulsory school age.
-
A person does not have a learning difficulty or disability solely because the language (or form of language) in which he or she is or will be taught is different from a language (or form of language) which is or has been used at home.

Identification of ALN
Pupils are identified as having ALN if they have a learning difficulty that requires additional learning provision (ALP) which is ‘additional to’ and ‘different from’ that which is provided across the school.
Following this, the ALNCo will contact families and other stakeholders supporting the learner to arrange a Person-Centered Practice (PCP) meeting. This meeting is undertaken in order to ensure that learners and their families are placed at the centre of planning, reviewing and making decisions about what matters in their lives, and the support, namely the additional provision, they require in order to flourish at Holton Primary School. If Additional Learning Provision is required and agreed by all, the ALNCo and class teacher will collaboratively create an Individual Development Plan (IDP), a live document with learning outcomes and provision that the school will provide to support learners. The IDP will be reviewed annually or earlier if needed (e.g. outcomes achieved, a change in need, a change in additional learning provision).
